Islamabad : At least 18 people were killed and more than 24 injured as high winds and heavy rains paralysed Pakistan’s southern port city of Karachi, media reports said Friday.
Most of the victims died as a result of roof collapses and electrocution, including two who died when a power line fell on their motorcycle rickshaw, the Geo news channel said.
Markets and houses in low-lying areas of the city were inundated with rain water after drainage systems ruptured.
The storm also disrupted electricity supplies, leaving 70 percent of the city without power and forcing thousands of people to remain in their homes.
The city was also hit by a heavy storm in June, when more than 100 people were killed, many of them by flying billboards.
