Ahmedabad : Japanese giant Toshiba Corp will supply supercritical steam turbines and generators for the proposed 4,000 MW ultra mega thermal power project (UMPP) to be built by Tata power in Kutch district of Gujarat.

The contract was awarded to Toshiba for the supply of five turbines and generators for the plant at Mundra, Tata Power Company announced Friday.

Once completed, the plant will produce 800 MW from its each state-of-the-art unit. The total output of 4,000 MW will make it the largest supercritical thermal power plant yet commissioned in India.

Both Tata Power and Toshiba did not divulge financial details of the deal. Toshiba is the world’s largest provider of steam turbines and generators, with over 1,800 units installed in over 40 countries worldwide.

Prasad R. Menon, managing director, Tata Power, said Friday: “This agreement is a significant step towards our efforts of drawing the technical expertise of a strong international player like Toshiba. This partnership will provide an excellent technical solution for Mundra UMPP which is also cost competitive.”
