New Delhi : India’s Anju Bobby George has finished third in the women’s long jump event at the Bayer-Meeting 2007 in Leverkusen (Germany).

Anju cleared 6.51 metres Friday, well below her season best of 6.65m, a statement from the Athletics Federation of India said Saturday.

Portugal’s Gomes Naide clinched the top honours with a leap of 6.83m. Bianca Kappler of Germany finished second with 6.73m.

Anju started with 6.48m but then slid down to 6.39m in her second jump. The lanky Keralite evoked hopes of a higher finish when she managed 6.51m but could not better it in her subsequent efforts.

Anju registered foul jumps in her fourth and fifth attempts and finished with 6.48m.

Gomes was in top form and along with her winning effort, registered 6.81m twice, 6.69m and 6.60m.

Local favourite Kappler was also considerably ahead of the Indian and backed up her best jump of 6.73m with attempts of 6.66m and 6.53m.
