According to US broadcaster CNN, the police since Friday have been using all available instruments to detect nuclear traces in the air and water.

Controls at bridge and tunnel entries have also been increased, CNN said.

During the surveillance of internet chatter several days ago, an alleged Al Qaeda threat was intercepted, suggesting terrorists were planning to smuggle a lorry with nuclear explosives into New York.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg played down the police’s security measures, saying “the New York police reacts almost daily to unconfirmed threats which are never carried out.”

Bloomberg declined to raise the terror alert level for the time being.
