10 killed as bus touches high-tension cable

Lucknow : Ten people died and 17 were injured after a bus they were travelling in came in contact with a sagging high-tension power cable in Uttar Pradesh Sunday.

With 60 passengers aboard, the Uttarakhand Roadways bus was on its way from Deoband to Roorkee when it came in contact with a 11,000 KV cable near Chandpur village in Saharanpur district, about 500 km from here.

The bulk of the passengers managed to jump out of the bus to safety.

While eight men and two women were killed, the injured included seven men, four women and six children.

“One of the injured passengers was in a serious condition and was rushed to the PGI (Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research) in Chandigarh,” District Magistrate Kamini Ratan Chauhan told IANS over telephone.

The other injured passengers are being treated at the Saharanpur district hospital, she added.
