Sania moves up one place to rank 29th

New Delhi : India’s Sania Mirza’s inspiring win over former world No.1 Martina Hingis of Switzerland at the East West Bank Classic tournament in Los Angeles helped her move up one place to the 29th spot in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings released Monday.

Sania now has 915 points. She also moved up one place in the doubles to 25 with 1,321 points.

Sania and her American partner Bethanie Mattek reached the quarterfinal of the East West Bank Classic, which boosted their improvement in the doubles rankings.

Sunitha Rao slipped four spots to 222 with 124 points, but she is still the next best Indian after Sania in WTA rankings. Shikha Uberoi gained three spots to 330 with 66.75 points.

In the men’s doubles rankings, Mahesh Bhupathi’s title-winning performance at Montreal Masters helped the ace Indian move up two places up to 19.

Rohan Bopanna also moved up three places to be ranked 89th, while Leander Paes continued to be in the top 10 despite losing one place to be ninth.

In the singles, Bopanna is the highest ranked Indian among men despite slipping one place to the 223rd position. Prakash Amritraj also slipped two places to 270, while Karan Rastogi climbed up one place to 339.
