London : More than three months after Bennett King stepped down as the West Indies cricket coach at the end of the 2007 World Cup, the board has finally advertised for applications to fill the post.

King’s deputy David Moore took charge on the recent tour of England. But on the field the team struggled and there were reports of disharmony off the field and of friction between the management and some players, reports appearing in Monday’s British newspapers said.

Moore will remain in charge for the Twenty20 World Championship in South Africa next month.

The big question seems to be whether the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) will risk appointing an overseas coach again after King, whose time was not helped by criticism in some quarters that he was hired from outside the Caribbean islands.

The applications close Aug 31. How soon the team will have a new coach will largely depend on how quickly new WICB president Julian Hunte can improve relations between the board and players, the papers added.
