New Delhi : Congress president Sonia Gandhi Tuesday asked party members to gear up for forthcoming assembly elections even as she condemned the disruptions in parliament during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s statement on the Indo-US civil nuclear deal.

Addressing Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) members at a meeting in the parliament house, Gandhi laid out strategies for assembly elections scheduled to be held late this year and in 2008.

Gandhi’s call came in the wake of speculation about a snap poll after Manmohan Singh dared his communist allies to withdraw support if they could not back New Delhi’s nuclear deal with Washington.

“Sonia Gandhi condemned the disruptions in parliament Monday by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and United National Progressive Alliance (UNPA) MPs,” Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told reporters after the CPP meeting.

While Gujarat is going in for assembly elections later this year, elections are to be held in four other states including Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh next year.
