Bargarh (Orissa) : A man in an Orissa town killed his wife and three children and attempted to commit suicide as he was unable to make ends meet with his meagre salary, police said Thursday.
Arjun Charan Pradhan, 40, and his wife Namita were rescued by villagers in a critical condition from a field on the outskirts of Bargarh town, some 350 km from state capital Bhubaneswar.

While Namita died on the way to hospital, Pradhan, who works as a driver, is currently undergoing treatment, a police official said.

Pradhan, who originally hails from a village in the southern district of Ganjam, told police that he had come to Bargah this year in search of a job.

“He said that he was not able earn adequate money to feed the family. He was not even able to pay his house rent for the past two months,” the official said.

Police had earlier recovered the bodies of his children – Anjali 14, Shankar 11, and Vicky, 8 – from a field near Tururla village, some 15 km from Bargarh. A bottle of poison was also found at the spot.

Pradhan said he and his wife first killed their children after which they consumed poison themselves.
