The bombing, which occurred about 15 km west of Kandahar, was targeting a convoy transferring logistics for NATO troops, police officer Ahmad Jan said.

He added that the convoy was being escorted by the US Protection and Investigations (USPI), a private security company.

Four Afghan employees of USPI were killed and seven other guards were injured in the explosion. Eleven passer-bys were also killed and 19 others injured in the attack, the official said.

A Xinhua reporter at the site saw two USPI vehicles and one police vehicle were damaged.

No one has claimed responsibility for the bombing but Taliban militants have frequently carried out similar attacks in the country.
