Kolkata : Chirag United SC beat Mohammedan Sporting 2-1 in the Calcutta Premier League (CPL) here Monday.
Keeping Sporting defence and goalie Gautam Das under pressure all through, Chirag’s midfielders and two forwards Shankar Oraon and Theo Tore Sunday put up a consistent and agile show.
With only four points in five CPL matches the black-and-white brigade seem to be in a tight spot in its attempt to finish within the first five this season while Chirag United is sitting in fourth spot with eight points from the same number of matches.
For Mohameddan Sporting, the only bright spot was experienced Basudeb Mondol. Even the slushy ground conditions couldn’t stop Mondol from sending his usual winning passes, a few brilliant free kicks as well as an excellent effort to stop the build-up of Chirag United attacks in the central midfield area.
Sporting would have won the match if it had at least one penetrative striker like either Shankar Orao or Theo Tore. Mohammed Zubair was far from perfect.
Theo Tore drew the first blood for Chirag United in the 30th minute. He controlled a Dhanarajan free kick in the six-yard box brilliantly, evaded his marker S.K. Azim and then jabbed through the far post.
Nirapada Mondol equalised for Sporting in the 37th minute via a superb right-footed volley after a perfect chest trap of a Luis Nigi clearance outside the 18-yard box.
Shankar Oraon struck the winner in the 70th minute. Receiving a Theo pass down the middle, Oraon had a solo run for a few yards, splitting the Sporting defence to play a one-two again with the advancing Theo inside the box before placing the ball in.
