Jakarta : The Karangetang volcano on Indonesia’s Siau island has been spewing lava and hot ashes since Saturday, forcing evacuation of more than 500 people living on its slope, local press said Monday.
The volcano, which rises some 1,700 metres in Sitaro regency, North Sulawesi province, has been rumbling and spewing lava over the past few days, reported leading news website Detikcom.
The red lava visibly flowed from the crater during the nights, local resident Roy Katiandagho told the website.
Monday’s rain caused another worry that it would cause cold lava to slide into residential areas.
“We have imposed an alert status on the volcano,” said Sitaro regent Idrus Mokodompit.
