Bangalore : As British media reported fresh evidence against deceased terror suspect Kafeel Ahmed, a family waited in Bangalore for official confirmation that he is their son.
Till British police confirm the identity, the family will not claim the body of Kafeel, who died early this month from 90 percent burns he suffered after he rammed a gasoline-filled jeep into Glasgow airport on June 30.
Kafeel is believed to be the elder son of Bangalore doctor couple Maqbool Ahmed and Zakhia Ahmed.
When the identity has not been established “how can the family claim the body”, city lawyer B.T. Venkatesh, who has been assisting the couple, told reporters Monday.
The couple’s younger son Sabeel Ahmed, also a doctor, is facing trial in Britain on charges of withholding information on the terror plot.
Initially, Maqbool and Zakhia had denied the badly burned man was their elder son Kafeel. But a few days later, they told Bangalore Police that from the TV footage it appeared to be their son Kafeel.
A few days later Zakhia retracted and said the family cannot confirm the identity of the injured man.
Since then they have been inaccessible to the media and Venkatesh has been speaking on their behalf.
Bangalore Police too maintain they have not received any official word so far from the British authorities that the dead man is Kafeel Ahmed, son of Maqbool and Zakhia Ahmed.
“Neither us nor Maqbool and Zakhia have received official confirmation that the dead man is their son Kafeel Ahmed,” a senior police official requesting anonymity said.
Earlier in the day, The Guardian reported in London that Kafeel had sent an email to a relative a few hours before driving the jeep into Glasgow airport that he wanted to be a martyr.
