“More than any other thing, love and compassion should be the essence of our education system,” he said.

He was speaking on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Satyanand Stokes, the American-born Christian missionary who brought delicious apple varieties to Himachal Pradesh in the early 20th century.

The function was held at Narkanda, 64 km from here, close to where Stokes lived and died in 1946.

“Stokes’ contribution to Himachal is tremendous. It is a proof of how a single person can bring about an economic revolution in an entire state,” said the Dalai Lama, who has made Dharmasala town in the state his home after leaving Tibet in 1959.
