New Delhi : A man from Gujarat was arrested here for illegally carrying 250 ml of cobra venom worth Rs.150,000 in the international market, police said Monday.
Bhavesh Rathod, a 30-year-old resident of Rajkot, was arrested from Shakti Nagar area in north Delhi late Sunday.
Police said they had received a tip-off that a man from Gujarat with a large quantity of venom had come to the capital to sell it and also that he was carrying it in a negligent manner thereby endangering human life.
According to wildlife experts, a few millilitres of cobra venom is capable of claiming hundred lives.
“During sustained interrogation Rathod revealed that he was working as a marketing agent in Gujarat for a company which manufactures detergent and washing powder. There he met one Ashok Kumar dealing in medicines who asked him to get snake venom and promised him a handsome profit margin,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Devesh Srivastava.
“Rathod then contacted his friend Yogesh, who deals in cobra snake venom and requested him to provide the venom. Rathod procured 250 ml from Yogesh and came to Delhi to deliver it to Ashok, but was apprehended,” Srivastava added.
