Seoul : South Korea and the US launched their annual joint military exercises Monday despite strong oppositions from North Korea.
The exercise, codenamed Ulchi Focus Lens (UFL), will last for 12 days.
According to the South Korean defence ministry, about 10,000 US troops, with about half of them coming from outside of the Korean peninsula, will participate in the exercise.
The UFL, which began in 1975, is the world’s largest computerized command-and-control exercise to foster joint defence capability of South Korea and the US.
North Korea has warned that the exercise will trigger a “catastrophic impact”.
