J&K State Assembly adjourned amid uproar, commotion

Srinagar : Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly was adjourned for three hours following noisy scenes over the issue of discussion on Khundru Army depot blasts, ST status to Paharis and Talwara migrants.

The House, which met here today, for the second day witnessed noisy scene and uproar by the opposition members forcing the speaker Tara Chand to adjourn the House.

While the National Conference and CPI (M) members were demanding a discussion on the fire incident in an army depot in South Kashmir, the Panthers Party MLAs – who recently withdrew their support to the coalition – sought discussion on the issue of Talwara migrants.

Some of the members from opposition (NC) and the ruling coalition ally (Congress) MLAs were also seen together in the well of the house demanding ST status for Pahari speaking people of the state.

Despite repeated attempts by the Speaker the situation went out of the control in the House. Amid din and commotion the speaker adjourned the house for three hours.

As soon as the house assembled, leader of opposition Abdul Rahim rather of National Conference raised the issue of adjournment to discuss Khandru Army depot fire incident. He was joined by CPI (M) MLA Mohd Yusuf Tarigami, who had also moved an adjournment motion on the same issue.

NC leader was joined by his party colleagues Sharif Ud Din Shariq, Ali Mohd. Sagar and Mir Saifullah and the opposition members stood on their feet demanding discussion on the issue.

While nothing was audible in the press gallery due to the commotion and uproar by the NC members, Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party MLA Harsh Dev Singh joined in.

The NPP MLA, who had moved an adjournment motion, raised the issue of lathicharge and relief to Talwara migrants. Demanding discussion on the matter, he alleged that Talwara migrant issue was also a human issue but no party was ready to speak for them.

The Speaker Legislative Assembly Tara Chand tried to pacify the agitated members but of no avail. He adjourned the House for 15 minutes at 10.05 am.

The House again assembled at 10.55 am but the members continued with their demands.

PDF MLA Usman Majid raised a ‘point of order’ on reassembly of the House and alleged that people are being taken for a ride as every time the house is being adjourned.

Finance, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Hamid Karra intervened and said that Khadru fire incident was a human issue and government is ready to discuss it.

In the meanwhile, NC MLA Kafil-ur-Rehman, Mushtaq Bukhari, Thakur Puran Singh of Cong rushed to the well and staged a dharna demanding discussion on ST status to Paharis.

They said that the despite court directions and decision in the year 1989 on the issue, no final decision has been taken on the issue.

JKNPP MLAs Faqir Nath and Balwant Singh also raised slogans over the issue of Talwara migrants and demanded starting zero hour.

The Speaker failing to pacify the members adjourned the house upto 2 p.m.
