Osaka : Lamine Diack was re-elected Wednesday for a third and final term as president of International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF), the world’s athletics governing body.
Senegalese Diack ran unopposed, receiving 167 votes at the 46th IAAF Congress. Nine members voted against him.
Diack became IAAF president in 1999 after the death of long-time supremo Primo Nebiolo of Italy.
Former star athletes Sergei Bubka of Ukraine and Sebastian Coe of Britain were elected IAAF vice presidents with 167 and 137 votes, respectively.
The IAAF Congress runs until Thursday ahead of Saturday’s start of the 11th world athletics championships in Osaka’s Nagain stadium. A record 203 countries are to participate in the championships, which run until Sep 2.
