Washington : A new leaked US intelligence report said that the future of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is uncertain in the coming period due to his inability to overcome sectarian divide in this embattled country.

The National Intelligence Estimate report, to be released later Thursday, said that there are “measurable but uneven improvements” in Iraq’s security since President George W. Bush authorised the troops surge last January, according to media reports.

Compiled by US intelligence agencies, the report warns of a premature withdrawal noting that the military strategy had some progress on the ground, in particular with Sunni insurgents who are now fighting the al-Qaeda.

This intelligence estimate comes ahead of the awaited September report by Commander of the Multinational Forces in Iraq, US General David Petraeus and US Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker on security and political progress on Iraq, a deadline widely seen as a turning point in the standoff between Bush and the Congress on Iraq’s policy.
