Chennai : In a clear bid to keep the Congress high command happy, the Tamil Nadu government Friday issued an official notification to rename the Old Mahabalipuram Road after former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.
A press statement said Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had accepted a request from state Congress president M. Krishnasamy to rename the road Rajiv Gandhi Road.
The OMR, going from south Chennai up to Pondicherry, has become a real estate hotspot and for 35 km it has become an IT industry hub, lined by engineering colleges and companies like Infosys, Cognizant and dozens of others.
The renaming comes ahead of External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s meeting with DMK president M. Karunanidhi here Saturday.
The senior Congress leader is expected to seek the DMK’s assurance of support ahead of next week’s tussle with allies and opponents over the Indo-US nuclear deal.
