Palani (Tamil Nadu) : Four people were killed when two rope-cars on the way to a popular hilltop temple in Tamil Nadu crashed Sunday evening.
Police said that the first car had almost reached the zenith when it lost control and hurtled downwards crashing into the second.
The mishap took place 350 km from Chennai en route to the ancient Dandayuthapani Swami Temple – believed to be the most important of the abodes of Lord Muruga, the divine offspring of Hindu Lord Shiva.
Of the dead, three belonged to a single family – two senior officials of the state government milk cooperative society in nearby Dindigul and Chennai and a 15-year-old girl.
Two children of the deceased suffered serious injuries and were hospitalised.
However, other devotees using the rope-car system were safe, temple officials said.
