Baghdad : American and Iraqi troops killed 33 gunmen in a military operation in the governorate of Diyala east of the Iraqi capital, the US Army said in a statement.
The combined operation, backed with gunship helicopters, was carried out in the region of Gobia, it said in the statement Tuesday, adding its objective was to reopen pipes that supply water to the nearby town of Al-Khales.
The assaulting force was attacked with gunfire during the operation and in retaliation, 13 terrorists were killed. Shortly later, the gunship helicopters intervened, strafing positions of the gunmen, killing 20.
Three gunmen were arrested, large caches of weapons were confiscated and water supplies were restored to Al-Khales.
