Former Haryana chief minister dies

Chandigarh : Former Haryana chief minister Banarsi Dass Gupta died in New Delhi Wednesday. He was 89.

He was under treatment for the last few months for age related ailments.

Gupta, a Congress leader, was the chief minister of Haryana twice, first from Dec 1, 1975 to April 29, 1977 and later from May 23, 1990 to July 12, 1990.

He was also a member of Rajya Sabha in 1996.

Gupta, a prominent Aggarwal community leader, had earlier served as the deputy chief minister and speaker of the Haryana state assembly.

He was born at Manheru village in Bhiwani district on Nov 5, 1917. He took active part in the freedom struggle.

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader Om Prakash Chautala condoled his death.

The state government declared a public holiday Wednesday in all its offices as a mark of respect. It has also declared a three-day state mourning.
