The 32-year-old former England captain hurt his knee 30 minutes into the Superliga final against Mexican side Pachuca here Wednesday night.

The star midfielder and Pachuca’s Fernando Salazar went after the ball just outside the Mexican club’s penalty area. Beckham tripped over the ball and fell, lying face down on the grass for a few seconds before getting up and hobbling off the field, signalling to the bench he needed to be replaced.

Alan Gordon replaced Beckham, triggering massive boos from the crowd of 12,500 at the Home Depot Centre. Salazar was substituted soon after the incident because of a strained right knee.

Beckham made his way to a wall near the touchline, bent over and held on to his knee before being helped to the bench. He had his right leg taped and then gingerly walked across the field to the tunnel at half-time.

Galaxy’s next engagement is Saturday’s home clash with Real Salt Lake in Major League Soccer.

Beckham was expected to leave Sunday to join England for 10 days to play in two Euro 2008 qualifying matches, but the latest injury might affect those plans.

Steve McClaren’s England entertain Israel Sep 8 and then host Russia four days later in Group E of the Euro 2008 qualifiers.
