In its charge sheet filed in the court of Additional Sessions Judge Ravinder Kaur, police said they had gathered enough evidence to prove that Salem tired to extort Rs.50 million from south Delhi-based contractor Ashok Gupta through his henchmen here.

Seeking the mobster’s prosecution on charges of extortion by threatening a person with dire consequences, police said that various provisions of Maharashtra Control of Organised Crimes Act (MCOCA) too are applicable against him as he ran the extortion syndicate from Dubai in 2002.

Police have already filed a charge sheet against his five accomplices who acted as his front men in operating the extortion racket in Delhi.

The five accomplices are Pawan Kumar Mittal alias Raja Bhai, Sajjan Soni alias Babu Bhai, Majid Khan alias Raju Bhai, Mohammed Ashraf alias Babloo and a woman, Chanchal Mehta.

The charge sheet said Salem’s five accomplices called up Gupta repeatedly at his instance to extort Rs.50 million from the businessman and threatening him.

Meanwhile, Judge Kaur also ordered Mumbai’s Arthur Road jail authorities to produce Salem in her court Oct 5.

Facing trial in eight cases, Salem has been lodged in the Mumbai jail since his extradition from Portugal in 2005.
