Bhopal : Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s brother-in-law Sanjay Singh was planning to join the Congress, a top party functionary said here Sunday.

“Sanjay met me in Nagpur a few days ago and expressed his willingness to join the Congress. The matter has been forwarded to party president Sonia Gandhi who will take a final decision,” Congress general secretary V. Narayanswamy told a press conference.

Leader of Opposition Jamuna Devi also said Sanjay Singh, who has often been accused by the opposition of being involved in financial irregularities allegedly committed by Chouhan, had met her Saturday. She, however, refused to divulge any details.

Narayanswamy, Madhya Pradesh in-charge of the Congress, said the party would stage a road blockade across the state Dec 8 to protest against alleged corruption in purchase of four dumpers.

The Lokayukt Special Police Establishment had registered a case against the chief minister, his wife and others for alleged irregularities in the purchase of four vehicles that were later hired out to the Rewa-based J.P. Cement.

The first information report (FIR) was registered following the directive of a local special court. The opposition has been demanding Chouhan’s resignation since then.

V. Narayanswamy said the party would take the issue to the masses.
