Islamabad : The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairperson Benazir Bhutto Monday told visiting Turkish President Abdullah Gul that her party would contest the general elections, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported.

The former prime minister of Pakistan met Abdullah Gul and exchanged views on matters of bilateral interest. “The meeting was very useful and we discussed all issues of bilateral interest, including transition of power in Turkey,” Benazir said addressing reporters after the meeting.

“I also briefed the visiting Turkish President on my party’s decision to contest the upcoming general elections as the PPP understands that elections would help strengthen the democratic process,” she said.

Nawaz Sharif, another former premier and leader of the opposition Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), was to meet Benazir here Monday evening to persuade her to join the opposition parties’ boycott of the general elections.
