The government decision to accord that status to Urdu in October has irked Bengalis.

“We will show the strength of our community to the government,” said Nimai Das Banerjee, general secretary of the Bengalis Association of Jharkhand (BAJ), the umbrella group of nine Bengali groups in the state.

BAJ will submit a memorandum to Governor Syed Sibte Razi Dec 16.

According to the 1991 census, 10.06 percent of the population in Jharkhand spoke Bengali and the percentage of Urdu speaking people was just 6.75 percent.
