Srinagar : Two foreign Islamist militants and two troopers were killed in a long drawn gunfight in Jammu and Kashmir that ended Wednesday morning.

Police said the militants from Laskar-e-Taiba (LeT) and two troopers of the counter insurgency Rashtriya Rifles (RR) 55 battalion were killed in Litter Mutt village of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, 40 km from here.

A paramilitary trooper of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and a Kashmiri policeman were injured in the battle that had erupted Tuesday afternoon.

“The encounter lasted for more than 12 hours and has now ended even though searches in the area are still on,” said Sardar Khan, the superintendent of police at Awantipora.

“All the civilians were safely evacuated from the area in order to ensure their protection before the militants were engaged,” the officer said.

Police sources told IANS that a residential house and a cowshed, which were being used as fortified bunkers by the guerrillas, have also been destroyed in the encounter.
