The explosion at the coalmine in Shanxi Province occurred Wednesday evening. At least 120 miners were working at the time of the incident. Villagers in Hongtong County of the province manage the coalmine.

Officials said workers’ associates launched their own operation to rescue the trapped miners. This resulted in the information reaching the concerned authorities only Thursday morning.

The cause of the accident is yet to be determined.

The coalmine produces 210,000 tonnes of coal annually.
