Opposition, Benazir in deadlock over Charter of Demands

By KUNA

Islamabad : A senior leader of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhuttos party Friday said that there was a deadlock between his Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) on the Charter of Demands (COD), aimed at ensuring free, fair and transparent general elections in Pakistan.

All mainstream opposition parties from the platform of APDM Wednesday decided to forge COD within two or three days that will ask President Musharraf to hold free and transparent elections or all opposition parties will boycott the elections.

However, two days have been passed but the opposition parties have failed to reach on an agreement on the COD.

Benazir Bhutto, chairperson of PPP, Friday left for Dubai for three days to meet with her children and ailing mother. However, media circles have been reporting that her visit is part of ongoing renewed dialogue between the government and her party.

Also, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, leader of six-party religious alliance Mutahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) has also rejected the option of boycotting elections.

Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, PPP leader, talking to media said that PPP is not going to boycott the elections, adding that they are fully prepared to participate in upcoming elections.

He said that APDM and PPPs join committee is still working to evolve consensus on COD and the deadlock is on the question of participating in the elections. PPP is trying to make its policy clear on APDM and convincing them to participate in elections, he added.

According to sources in Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) led by Nawaz Sharif, former Prime Minister who ended his eight-year long exile in November, the APDM has reached on 13 demands that include reconstitution of impartial election commission and neutrality of a caretaker government.

However, sources said that the two main parties PPP and PML-N have difference over the option to boycott elections, restoration of disposed judges and a deadline to the government to meet their COD.
