Islamabad : The two main opposition leaders Saturday called on President Pervez Musharraf to roll back post-emergency measures along with the state of emergency, which is likely to be lifted on December 15th.
Qazi Hussain Ahmed, central leader of six-party religious alliance Mutahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA), and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif held a meeting, discussed the political situation of the country and exchanged views on the Charter of Democracy (COD) and differences between Nawaz and Benazir Bhutto parties.
The two leaders later talking to newsmen urged President Musharraf to not only lift emergency rule, which he proclaimed on Nov 3rd but also withdraw all the actions taken after emergency imposition that include curbs on media and suspension of judges who refused to approve his emergency decision.
Ahmad said the lifting of emergency without taking back the November 3 actions would be of no use.
“We want to win the war waged by the judiciary by all means, as it was a war of the 160 million people,” said Sharif. He said important decisions about elections boycott will be taken on Sunday after All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) meeting.
Ahmad said that he was firm on the demand of the restoration of the judiciary to its prior November 3 position because if those actions are not withdrawn, the lifting of emergency would be fruitless.
There comments came amid the Attorney General Abdul Qayyum has said that the government has decided to lift emergency on Dec 15th, a day ahead President Musharraf has announced to do.
All opposition parties from the APDM platform earlier this week announced to boycott the elections in case the government does not agree to their COD that will ensure free fair and transparent elections beside reconstitution of impartial election commission. However, differences have emerged among the parties over COD as Benazir Bhutto and Maulana Fazlur Rehman, another MMA leader, have refused to boycott the elections.
