Tehran : Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki has accused the US of spying on the country’s nuclear programme and said Tehran has formally sent a letter to Washington seeking its explanation on the matter.
“The foreign ministry has sent a letter to the Swiss Embassy in Tehran, as caretaker of the US interests, calling for explanations on the US espionage on Iran’s nuclear issue,” Mottaki was quoted as saying by official news agency IRNA.
“In that report it has been said that they (the Americans) have obtained the information through espionage satellite and espionage activities,” said Mottaki referring to the recent US intelligence report that said Iran had stopped its weaponising activities in 2003.
He said the day when the report was published, foreign ministry voiced its protest in a note to the Swiss Embassy, asking it to provide Iran with explanations about the espionage.
“There are both facts and lies in the report of the Americans,” the Iranian minister said.
A US intelligence report on Iran’s nuclear activities Monday said that Tehran had suspended its weapons programme four years ago and has shown no sign of resuming it.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad hailed the report and called the finding as a “victory” for Iran.
The Islamic country says its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes and aimed at producing electricity.
It also rejected the West’s demand to stop uranium enrichment programme and reiterated that it would continue its programme as it has a right to enrich uranium under the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty.
