Shimla : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will amend the law to facilitate the building of a grand Ram temple in Ayodhya if it wins the next general elections, party president Rajnath Singh said Tuesday.
“The day we get an absolute majority, we will bring in a law so that a Ram temple is built at the disputed site in Ayodhya,” Rajnath Singh told reporters here.
“But we will (take recourse to law) only if courts fail to find a solution and talks fail with Muslim leaders,” he added.
The BJP and allied Hindu groups favour a grand Ram temple on the ruins of the Babri mosque that was razed by Hindu mobs Dec 6, 1992 in Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh.
The statement comes a day after the party decided to project L.K. Advani as its prime ministerial candidate.
Talking about the decision, Rajnath Singh said: “Projecting Advani as the prime ministerial candidate is the wish of the party, particularly senior leader (and former prime minister) Atal Behari Vajpayee.”
The BJP president was unable to hold two rallies Tuesday in Himachal Pradesh due to bad weather.
He launched a blistering attack on the Congress government in New Delhi, saying it had compromised the security issues.
He demanded that controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen should be granted refugee status in India and accused the Congress of mistreating her even though it had given shelter to “30 million Bangladeshis” in the country.
Meanwhile, Congress president Sonia Gandhi also failed to address two rallies in Kangra and Mandi districts due to bad weather Tuesday.
The second and last phase of polling for 65 seats is to take place Dec 19. Counting will take place Dec 28.
Three seats have already gone to the polls in the first phase Nov 14 due to threat of early snowfall in the three tribal seats of Bharmaur, Lahaul and Spiti and Kinnaur.
