50 Taliban fighters killed in Afghanistan

Kabul : Over 50 Taliban fighters were killed in southern Afghanistan in two days of intense battles, the Afghan defence ministry said Wednesday.

The rebels were fleeing Musa Qala after they lost control of the town in Sangin district of Helmand province, according to defence ministry spokesman Zahir Azimi.

Among those killed were three commanders and three foreign fighters.

Taliban fighters had controlled Musa Qala for 10 months but abandoned the town Monday during an intense offensive operation by Afghan, British and US forces.

Meanwhile, in the southern city of Kandahar, a suicide bomber targeted Afghan army soldiers, police chief Agha Saqib confirmed Wednesday.

The incident happened in the district five of Kandahar city. There were no details about casualties.

Afghanistan has already witnessed 140 suicide attacks in 2007.
