New Delhi : The race for the top post in power utility major NTPC Ltd is hotting up, with incumbent head T. Sankaralingam set to retire April 30 next year after the government refused to extend his tenure.

The Public Enterprises Selection Board (PSEB), the government agency in charge of selecting the person for the job, is currently in the process of conducting preliminary interviews to short-list candidates.

As many as four internal candidates from NTPC, including R.S. Sharma, director commercial, R.K. Jain, director technical, Chandan Roy, director operation, and director finance A.K. Singhal, are in the fray, sources said.

Additionally, Raji Philip, chairman and managing director, Hindustan Paper Corp, a state-owned enterprise, has also joined the race for the NTPC’s top post.

The PSEB committee constituted to finalise selection of a candidate for the job is meeting Dec 17, sources said.

Chandan Roy is being seen as a frontrunner for the job because of the fact that he is the most senior director in the company. He has wide professional experience in key areas, including site management, design and engineering and plant operation, sources pointed out.

Besides, he has been non-controversial as the NTPC’s director operations, sources added.

He is, however, likely to face tough competition.
