Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki met with visiting Egyptian Deputy Foreign Minister Hussein Derar and the two sides discussed “bilateral ties, regional and international issues”, IRNA said.

They described the talks as “constructive” and called for continuation of such talks, IRNA added.

According to IRNA, Derar passed on a written message from Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit to Mottaki during the meeting.

Derar, who arrived here late Tuesday, also held talks with Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi.

Iran and Egypt currently only have interests sections in their respective countries after Iran cut ties in 1980 in protest against Egypt’s recognition of Israel.

Tehran was also furious after Egypt granted asylum to the last Iranian shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who was dethroned in the 1979Iranian Islamic Revolution.

The shah is interred in a mausoleum in the Al-Rifa’i mosque in Cairo.
