Mexico : Mexican Senator Carlos Jimenez Macias referred to damage to Mexican agriculture incurred by the North American Free Trade Agreement and disproportionate US competition.
In an interview on Friday with Prensa Latina, Jimenez Macias explained that NAFTA put Mexico at a disadvantage because its farmers have to confront US agricultural and livestock business with higher technology, better resources and government subsidies.
He was in favor of modifying the treaty, but he cautioned that, while the United States may commit to eliminating subsidies to make competition fairer, it will never keep such a promise.
In view of this current worrying situation, the Mexican Congress agreed to establish a committee, with all political forces represented, to follow carefully the implementation of the treaty.
