Next US president must visit Iran, says American professor

London, Dec 15, IRNA , It is vital for the successor to US President George W Bush to visit Iran, according to an American professor of political science and contemporary politics.

“The next US president must go to Tehran,” Leslie Elliott Armijo said Saturday concurring with an article by contributing editor to the Financial Times (FT) Niall Ferguson.

“The mid-21st century world will be multipolar. We are right to debate the relative rise of the group Goldman Sachs baptised the “Brics countries,” said Armijo, who is currently Visiting Scholar at Portland State University.

“We should add Iran to this group” of Brazil, Russia, India and China and their implications for the global system, she said in a letter to the FT.

The professor argued that if the west formed the idea of Iran being an emerging power, then “we would recognise the overwhelming importance of helping its leaders see benefits.”
In his article, Ferguson said Bush’s successor needs a “different approach, offering a grand bargain to Tehran: economic assistance and diplomatic rapprochement.”
