Chandigarh to have weeklong New Year festival

Chandigarh : A host of events will be held here in the last week of December to mark the Chandigarh New Year festival.

A spokesman of Chandigarh Tourism said Sunday that the weeklong activities would be held between Dec 26 and Jan 1. Various cultural activities have been planned to rock the people and tourists visiting here.

He said that all government buildings, the city’s Open Hand monument, heritage buildings in Sector 19 and all hotels would be illuminated during the festival.

The official said that musical evenings have been arranged to entertain the people of city. Songs of popular music director of yesteryears, the late R.D. Burman, will be sung at the city’s famous tourist attraction – Sukhna Lake – Dec 26 by various local artistes.

Similar programme will be held at the city’s commercial hub – the Sector 17 plaza.

Events on other days will include fusion music by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Subhash Ghosh, performances by children and classical dance performances. Singer Kailash Kher will perform at the Sector 17 plaza Dec 29.

A musical evening with a laser light show followed by fireworks will be held at the Sector 17 plaza on the last day of the year – Dec 31.

The New Year will begin with a local sightseeing trip on the double-decker bus and boat rides for children at Sukhna Lake.
