Syria, Iraq to enhance security co-op

Damascus : Syrian Interior Minister Bassam Abdelmajid said on Sunday that Syria and Iraq are keen to enhance security cooperation, especially combating terrorism and implementing security agreement signed between the two countries.

Abdelmajid made the remarks in a statement to the press after talks with his visiting Iraqi counterpart Jawad Kazem al-Bulani.

He underlined Syria’s adherence to the integrity of Iraq’s land and people, affirming that Iraq’s security guarantees Syria’s security and vice versa.

Abdelmajid also noted that Syria is prepared to offer anything that can reduce the burdens of Iraqi refugees.

For his part, Bulani expressed appreciation of the steps taken by Syria to restore security and stability in Iraq and its efforts in monitoring the border between the two countries.

According to the official SANA news agency, the two sides renewed their commitment during their meeting to cooperation on preventing activities that threaten the security and stability of the two countries, affirming their desire to strengthen and improve relations between Syria and Iraq.

Bulani was accompanying Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Barham Ahmed Saleh on a three-day official visit to Syria.
