Kolkata : Trinamul Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee Tuesday observed the death anniversary of Singur girl Tapasi Malik, whose charred body was found Dec 18 last year inside the fenced off area of the upcoming Tata Motors small car project site.
Banerjee addressed a rally in Singur, about 40 km from here in Hooghly district, on the death anniversary of Malik, who was found murdered during the protest against the state government’s acquisition of land for the car plant.
Urging the people of Singur to continue their crusade, Banerjee flayed the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) for “losing” all its ideological moorings.
Malik was in the forefront of the anti-land acquisition movement along with her family. Her body was found inside the fenced off area of the Tata Motors plant at the time Banerjee was on an indefinite fast in Kolkata against the car project.
Malik was allegedly raped and then burnt alive by the miscreants. In June, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested CPI-M Singur zonal committee secretary Suhrid Dutta and party supporter Debu Malik in the connection with the case.
On Monday, a sharecropper, Shankar Patra, of Singur’s Khaserbheri committed suicide. He tilled the land that went to the Tatas for their factory.
The Trinamul leader visited Patra’s house.
