Mumbai : Rashid Khan Tuesday fired a six-under 64 to take the lead in the opening round of the Sunfeast Western India junior and sub-Junior golf championship at the par-70 Bombay Presidency Golf Club here.
Vicky Sharma was lying a far second with one under par-69 while Amanjyot Singh shot a level par-70 to be in the third position. Rommel Majumdar was sole fourth with two-over-72 while Angad Cheema was fifth with 73.
Rahul Bakshi was tied for the sixth spot along with Abhijit Chada at 74 as only two sub-par cards were recorded for the day.
Rashid who emerged as the under-16 and overall champion at Mission Hills recently was striking the ball well right from the start. Making a birdie on the opening hole, the 16-year-old made an eagle on the fourth. A good tee shot couple with a perfect 7-iron left him for a 20-feet eagle putt, which he sank with ease.
Another birdie followed on the next hole as the young lad from Delhi continued his march making consecutive birdies on the seventh and eighth to be six-under after the front nine.
Rashid saved a stroke on the par-3 tenth. However, the youngster who belongs to Delhi Golf Club made his first and only mistake on the par-4 15th where he duffed his second shot and landed in the green side bunker and could make an up and down.
“I admit that it was a real bad shot and paid the penalty. But I am happy with my round as I hit it really well,” said Rashid who hit 14 greens and made 26 putts. “It is a great start and hope to finish as the winner.”
Meanwhile Vicky Sharma made four birdies on the fifth, seventh, 10th and 12th while making three bogeys on the sixth, ninth and 15th to return a card of one-under 69.
