New Delhi : Delhi Police were baffled Tuesday by three shooting incidents that took place Monday evening within the span of an hour in different parts of the capital, leaving one dead and two injured.
The first incident took place near Dhaula Kuan in southwest Delhi. The police received a distress call that a motorbike rider, Deepak Sherawat, has been shot dead, while his younger brother and pillion rider Amit Sherawat was critically injured after two unidentified assailants opened fire at them.
The duo was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital, where doctors declared Deepak as brought dead, while his younger brother’s condition remained critical.
“Initially, it appeared that Deepak succumbed to bullet injuries but his post-mortem examination report revealed that he died in an accident. According to doctors, Amit was not fit for any police statement,” said a senior police official investigating the case.
The official said it was still unclear how the mishap occurred. The police have recovered a dead pigeon during a search of the deceased’s clothes.
“We are investigating the case and would reveal the cause after taking Amit’s statement,” the official told IANS, adding that a case would be registered only after the post-mortem examination report.
A little later Monday evening, the police received a similar distress call from the capital’s high security Chanakyapuri area.
Neeraj Sharma, owner of a domestic call centre in Karol Bagh area, told the police that two motorcycle-borne assailants fired at him while he was on his way towards Dhaula Kuan from Chanakyapuri in his car.
None of the bullets hit him, but they went through the car windowpanes, he said.
The police Tuesday said they were investigating the case. “But we have not found any bullets near the spot and Sharma has also changed his statements. We have registered a case of attempt to murder and are taking the help of forensic experts,” they said.
Within some time, a third shooting incident was reported – from Sadar Bazar area in north Delhi. Two robbers who barged into a house, fired at a domestic help for resisting them. The assailants escaped with Rs.100,000 in cash on a motorbike. The police have not been able to make any arrests so far.
