Washington : The US expects South Korea’s newly elected President Lee Myung Bak to continue his country’s strong support for nuclear talks with North Korea.
“I don’t think we expect to see any fundamental change in South Korea’s basic positions with respect to the United States or with respect to the importance of the six-party talks,” US State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey said Wednesday.
Lee of the conservative opposition Grand National Party (GNP) declared victory Wednesday after scoring a clear margin over main rival Chung Dong Young. He is set to become the first South Korean president to receive a clear majority vote.
After years of talks with South Korea, the US, Russia, China and Japan, Pyongyang has agreed to dismantle its Yongbyon nuclear complex and declare all of its nuclear activities by the end of the year, although it has been slow in coming forth with the actions.
