Six passengers died on the spot and another died on his way to SN Medical College around 9 p.m. Friday. Of the six injured, one is in critical condition.

More than 12 people were onboard the taxi when it started from Bah tehsil. A police source said the vehicle was going at high speed.

The driver had tried to overtake another vehicle near Budehra village, but lost control, and hit a tractor coming from the opposite direction.

The passengers were thrown out from the vehicle on the impact of the collision. The injured were crying for help. The tractor driver, the taxi driver and a conductor ran away, the police said.

When villagers turned up for help, there was a minor scuffle and stone-pelting, because the villagers wanted the bodies to be identified on the spot, but the police wanted to take them first to the hospital.
