Washington : The US Congress has put restrictions on military aid to Pakistan by linking part of the aid package to benchmarks in “democracy” and the fight against terrorism, media reports said.

According to a spending bill approved by the US Congress earlier this week, $50 million out of the $300 million annual military aid to Pakistan will be subject to these conditions.

The bill said $50 million would be paid once Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice confirms Islamabad is making progress in the war against Al Qaeda.

Other conditions include restoration of the constitution, civil liberties and an independent judiciary by Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf.

The US reviewed its aid package to Pakistan after Musharraf imposed emergency rule last month.
