Ranchi : Jharkhand has a young assembly and it shows in the way its members dress. Perturbed by increasing instances of legislators and ministers turning up wearing jeans, coloured shirts and caps, Speaker Aalamgir Aalam is now mulling implementing a dress code.
“We will convene a meeting of all party leaders and legislators and try to ensure a consensus on the need for a dress code,” said Alam.
Former speaker and independent legislator Inder Singh Namdhari had raised the issue of dress code for the legislators.
“There should be a dress code for legislators and ministers. There are many ministers who come to the assembly improperly dressed, which gives a bad impression,” said Namdhari.
Rural Development Minister Enos Ekka, Health Minister Bhanu Pratap Shahi, Science and Technology Minister Chandra Prakash Chaudhary, former home minister Sudesh Mahto prefer wearing coloured shirts, caps and printed suits.
The young ministers have reacted sharply to Namdhari’s suggestion for a dress code.
“We know very well what we should wear and what not. Namdhari should not worry about these things,” said Shahi.
While Chief Minister Madhu Koda and former chief minister and leader of opposition Arjun Munda are both under 40, nearly 20 percent of the 82-member assembly is below the age of 45.
Munda prefers kurta-pajama in the house while Koda wears both trousers and shirts or kurta-pajama.
