Ahmedabad : It was billed as the battle royal, but Chief Minister Narendra Modi turned it into a cakewalk, trouncing union minister Dinsha Patel of the Congress in the Maninagar constituency here.
Modi in fact increased his winning margin from 77,000-odd votes to more than 87,000 this time, according to results declared Sunday.
The Congress picked Patel, the minister of state for petroleum and natural gas in Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government and a popular politician with a clean image, to take on Modi. But Patel failed to stand up to the Modi wave.
This was Modi’s third election in his career – he had won his first in December 2001 from Rajkot with a thin majority.
