Mumbai : One commuter was killed and at least three others were seriously injured when five coaches of a suburban train derailed in north-east Mumbai Sunday morning.
The dead commuter was identified as Moreshwar Mahadik, 20, a spokesperson for Central Railways (CR) told IANS.
CR Divisional Railway Manager J.N. Lal told IANS that the slow local train left Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) for its destination Titwala in neighbouring Thane district. The accident took place at 11.40 a.m. between Kurla and Vidyavihar stations.
“The casualties were not due to derailment. When the train bogies started falling, commuters mistook it for a bomb blast and jumped out of the running train,” Lal said, quoting eyewitness accounts.
The victims are undergoing treatment at the nearby government-run Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar where they were taken by Railway Protection Force constables.
Being a holiday, the train, which would usually be jam-packed, was running almost empty. Other trains have been diverted to different tracks.
